Micah is a labor & birth doula serving Whidbey Island.
Click to learn more about what a doula is!
A doula is "a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible." (www.DONA.org)
Research shows that people who use the support of a doula during labor and delivery are less likely to require medical intervention (pitocin, epidurals, etc.), are less likely to see their birth result in a c-section, and are far more likely to describe their birth experience in a positive light. Doulas provide constant support and encouragement throughout labor. And, according to the CDC, "doula-assisted mothers were four times less likely to have a low birth weight baby, two times less likely to experience a birth complication involving themselves or their baby, and significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding."
Childbirth interventions and c-section rates are at an all-time high in the United States, even when the birthing person is perfectly healthy and has no medical concerns. This is due, in part, to understaffed hospitals and birth centers where care providers and labor & delivery nurses are stretched very thin. Because of this, people are starting to more frequently request the assistance of a doula at their birth to aid in the mental, emotional, and physical - well - labor of childbirth.
A doula's support extends beyond the birthing person to the support person/people in the room as well! I'll work with your partner or support person to teach them how to best support your labor and delivery experience as well as answer any questions or concerns they might have throughout.
So what will your experience be like with me?
After our initial meeting, if you decide that I'm the right doula for you, we'll both sign a contract laying out the specifics to ensure we all know what is expected.
Pre-Natal Meetings: We will meet at least two (2) more times before your due date. During those visits, we'll discuss your birth goals and talk through any questions you may have. Together, we will discuss the birth preferences that meet your needs and will work together to help you achieve those goals. All our pre-natal visits will take place at the location of your choosing (a coffee shop, park, your home, wherever!). There isn't ever a time limit on these meetings so that you have the time and space to work through any questions or concerns you have. While I cannot and will not offer medical advice, I will offer educated answers to your questions to help you make the most informed choices for your family.
Always Available: I am available for phone and email consultations immediately from the date that the signed contract is returned to me and receipt of payment of the Retainer Fee is confirmed. I encourage you to contact me with questions, concerns, and any updates. I will get back to you as soon as I can - this will usually be immediately, but definitely within 24 hours.
Labor & Birth Support: Support during your labor and delivery includes anything I bring in my Doula Bag O' Tricks! My bag is stocked with a rebozo, relaxation masks, a bluetooth speaker, snacks, essential oils, and so much more! Regardless of the length of your labor, I'll be with you. My fees won't increase (or decrease) based on duration or outcome.
Postpartum Support: One (1) postpartum visit is included in my doula package. This visit will take place in the comfort of your own home, where we can talk about your birth and work through any questions or concerns you have. I also offer help with babywearing (woven wraps, ring slings, SSCs, etc.).
Photography: I always have my iPhone with me and will snap photos during your labor and delivery as my work allows, but I also include 10-20 edited photos from my Nikon D3200 during the first hour or two with your new baby. Full birth photography coverage can be added to your contract for an additional fee.
